Ontrack Data Recovery

Tape recovery process

Data Recovery is much more than just replacing parts. A dedicated R&D staff and 20 years experience can build cutting edge tape recovery tools and processes.

  • Tape recoveries are performed in dust-free cleanroom environments
  • Tapes and tape drives are carefully dismounted, examined and processed
  • Proprietary tools can “force” the drive to read around the bad area to recover your data successfully
  • Drives are imaged and a copy of the disk is created and transferred to new system
The first step towards a successful data recovery is for us to discuss the problem with you. Often we can identify the cause of the problem simply by listening to your description of events.

Examine

Your tape will be thoroughly examined for damage by one of Kroll Ontrack specialists before any attempt is made to read the data.

Secure

Kroll Ontrack will perform a low-level read from your tape. At this stage we are concerned with securing as complete a copy of your data as can be taken. This is vital, especially with worn or damaged media.

Process

Working from a secured copy of your data we identify the data format and decide which of our utilities will be able to recover your files.

We will quantify the additional work that is required to complete your data recovery. With damaged tapes this might mean attempting to extract additional data to rebuild a vital file.

It is the nature of backup utilities that formats develop and change and so Kroll Ontrack is always ready to modify and develop new programs. All software that Kroll Ontrack uses is developed by our own software specialists.

Return

A copy of your data is held in our fireproof safe whilst the files you require are returned. Once you are satisfied that the recovery has been successful we will securely erase any copies of your data and return your original tape.

We're very happy to talk to you about what types of media and backup formats we can recover data from and anything else you might want to know!
